Thank you, Icebreaker. But is that all? So far, I only have a half system. There are obviously more programs I can't install with synaptic. For example, I need the plugin for Java applets in my browsers. I opened a web page with containing an applet and the opportunity to download the plugin was shown to me. But when I download the rpm file, debian doesn't now what to do with it. (My old Fedora was much more intelligent.) I asked synaptic to install rpm (and yum), but debian still doesn't know what to do. (Allright, there is the shell command for rpm, but I don't want to do that for every following program.) I gave up and installed the other alternative for the plugin installation: the bin file. But again, debian doesn't know what to do with it. Stupid computer. At this stage, I consider another attempt to install (K)ubuntu again, which I was running for some days. But with KDE 4.1 things only looked nice for a while and I ran into problems. So I thought I try a stable and solid debian. And now this... I am pretty lost.
