Or, configure your combo modem thing to work properly. I suspect that this isn't even an issue with ubuntu, but rather your config. So if you plugged a fresh Windows XP install in, it probably wouldn't work either. @OP: try doing what Janaka said(dhpclient), and post the results. @Dan: unconfigure the PPoE. If you really have a router, you don't need this setting at all.
