After some forum reading I found the fix I needed. It was exactly what I needed, but in order to get there, I needed to specifically identify my problem. My wireless chip is the Intel Wireless Wifi Link 5100. This piece of hardware was having issues back in the Hardy version sometime in August-October. The Intrepid release seemed to have fixed the bug issue with the driver just out of the box, but for some (like me), over time the bug showed its face again.
I found this useful thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5754065&postcount=62 Since I'm using 8.10, the intel linux wireless driver 5000 series was already installed. Just for good measure, I downloaded it again and copied it to the firmware (following posted instructions from above). But the real fix was downloading the compat-wireless package and using make to install the needed software. Problem solved thus far and seems like a final fix.
