Sounds like fear mongering to me. You can pass on viruses in Linux but I have never heard of anyone contracting one. I have used Linux for many years without any virus protection and I do lots of email.
Basically I don't care about spreading Windows viruses. Anyone who uses Windows deserves what they get, IMO. Likewise in Linux if you are stupid enough to run as root or give a virus access to your root partition then you deserve it. I would like to see this substantiated before we start sending messages promoting fear. Show me evidence of a Linux user being infected through using Thunderbird and you will get my attention.
