The X server isnt really a server like you are thinking. It's what runs your
display manager/etc.

Not sure how to stop it, maybe:

-Log out
-ctrl+alt+f1
-Login
-killall xserver
-sudo sh nividainstallthing

that's the idea anyway. I'm not sure of the exact command to kill X, maybe
someone can tell you. Or just read the readme file, like it suggested.
