The X server isnt really a server like you are thinking. It's what runs your display manager/etc. Not sure how to stop it, maybe: -Log out -ctrl+alt+f1 -Login -killall xserver -sudo sh nividainstallthing that's the idea anyway. I'm not sure of the exact command to kill X, maybe someone can tell you.
