I'm pretty sure this won't give anyone a "vicarious thrill", but here goes: * Previously Played Games:*
- *Alhmabra*: Denee and I taught this to a young couple from Idaho. They seemed to enjoy it although they didn't realize (until it was too late) the importance of only buying when you have exact change. - *Automobile*: I played a 4-player game of this on Friday and a 5-player game on Saturday. I had heard several people rave about the 5-player game being the sweet spot and I have to agree. The winning score in our 5-player game was over $5000 which was as high as our 3 and 4 player games. So I am thinking the number of players doesn't really slow down one's earning potential. * Games New to Me:* - *Healthy Heart Hospital*: Designer Scott Nelson showed Denee and me how to play his co-op prototype. It was actually better than I thought it would be. Each player takes on the role of a doctor and works with the other doctors to keep patients alive. I assume this game was somewhat inspired by Pandemic where cubes are used to indicate severity of the situation. Rather than limit outbreaks you must limit number of patient deaths. - *Ninja vs. Ninja*: The son of the owner of Out of the Box publishing was demoing several new Out of the Box games. Denee and I went head-to-head in this checkers varient. The ninjas are cool looking but the game seemed quite lame. If you are looking for a very simplified version of Dungeon Twister maybe this would appeal to you. - *Word on the Street*: For our next Out of the Box experience, Denee and I teamed up in this party game against the owner's son and Alf Seegert (the designer of Bridge Troll). Denee does quite well at word games which was enough to power us to victory. Neither of us thought the game was compelling enough to put on our want list. - *Oregon*: Denee bought me this game for my birthday last week but I hadn't had a chance to play it yet. Tom Vasel of the Dice Tower podcast recommended it but I take what he says with a large grain of salt because his sweet spot seems to be the lighter games. Anyway I was glad to get in a game of this at the gathering. It is a lighter family-type Eurogame that has some similar elements as in Carcassonne and Hacienda. If you are looking for a theme-rich experience similar to the old PC Oregon Trail game, this isn't it. - *Finca*: The Spiel podcast reviewed the five Spiel des Jahres nominees and Finca sounded interesting enough to merit a try. The board and bits are very nice. The gameplay uses a move mechanic similar to Cartagena and Emerald where the number of spaces you must move is equal to the number of pawns on your start space. This is more a game of tactics than long term strategy since the board can change so much before your next turn. I enjoyed the game but doubt I will be buying it. - *Space Junkyard*: Seth Hiatt, owner of Mayday Games, taught three of us how to play this game which has enjoyed some popularity as a free print-and-play design. Mayday is producing a professional version this fall, but for now we played using a prototype. The artwork and some of game mechanics reminded me of Galaxy Trucker minus the real-time aspect. I can see why many people enjoy this game and will be interested to see what the finished game looks like. Well, that is my report. Unfortunately we had to leave early on Saturday and missed out on a few more games. I wanted to try *Railways of England and Wales *and *Bridge Troll* but didn't get the chance. Everyone was very nice and I didn't see any fist fights.
