Session report: I showed up around 6:45 to find Chris, Jake, Bob and Jeremy playing a game of Airships. I watched for a little while and also browsed the store. Then Mark T. and Ran showed up.
One of the employees, Jason, was waiting for some people to show up that he was supposed to teach Wings of War: Dawn of World War 2 to. Having owned WoW: Famous Aces and played Burning Drachens I was curious what the WWII game is like. It's basically the same thing except with high speed and low speed on your cards. So it still looks like a fun game. Oh, it was the first time I'd played with the miniatures too, so that was fun. The Airships game wrapped up so instead of delaying everyone with my small game of WoW, Jason and I called it quits. There was much debate on whether we should start up two games of Tales of the Arabian Nights or one game of Tales and a game of something else. Ran wasn't very interested in playing Tales and said he was feeling pretty tired but eventually it was settled that Bob, Chris, Jake and I would play Tales and Mark T., Jeremy and Ran played Automobile. Jeremy was kind enough to patiently answer our rules questions (which came up about every 20 minutres) as he had played before. I was Ali Baba and picked 12 story points and 8 destiny points for my win conditions. We drew random skills and started playing. The Book of Tales and the matrices chart took some getting used to, but soon we had the system down pretty well. We forgot to draw quest cards at the beginning of the game but realized the mistake about half way through and then drew some. Mine was to travel the world seeking exotic flavors and spices. How Iron Chef! Some of my highlights were being imprisoned early on in the game, but a friendly jailor who wanted to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca freed me so that I might accompany him. I was ensorceled a few times, I helped a cold enchantress exact vengenance on a righteous vizeer and I was beat up by a princess in disguise! My tales were rather meager compared to everyone else. Chris was also imprisoned later in the game. He was grief stricken most of the game due to an unfortunate encounter with a barber who was quite powerful in magic and chattered so much while cutting hair that it often lead people to suicide! Bob was persued by bandits for a while. Jake went insane, recovered and managed to enter the Valley of Diamonds were he snuck past the serpent guardians, killed a giant snake and came out with a Giant Diamond! As far as points went it was a close game between Chris, Bob and Jake (I was hopelessly out of the running). In fact we had a tie breaker win! Although I forget who won, was it Chris or Bob? I thought the game was pretty fun. It's more of an experience than a game though. It's kind of hard to develop a strategy and you don't really feel like you're competing with each other. Instead it feels like each player is having a Choose Your Own Adventure while the rest of the players laugh at their misfortunes and awe at their discoveries of fortune. It took us about 3hours I'd say to play. You could easily modify game length by choosing a smaller number of story/destiny points to reach. I'd definitely like to play again and would consider adding it to my collection if the wife got to try it out and liked it.
