What version of "make" is on your system?
This note from the patches README may be relevant:
Note that you need at least version 3.80 of GNU make to be able to
compile
the AccessLibrary code as part of the SnapGear Source distribution. Some
older versions of make did not correctly handle the "eval" operation used
in some of the SnapGear versions of AccessLibrary Makefiles. Check the
version of make installed on your system using "make -v".
