For those who are interested, I did get samba to work with uClibc on x86
snapgear. Just dropping in the samba module from the "snapgear-20080711"
release into a 3.5 snapgear build produces binaries that will run without
segfaulting.
I didn't really test smbd/nmbd, but at a superficial level, they appears to
work better than the one included in the 3.5 release.
"smbmount" runs without crashing, and can browse a remote smb filesystem, but
seemed to have a problem when actually transferring files. After doing some
research, I found that the "smbfs" kernel module+smbmount is now considered
obsolete, so I tried building my kernel with the "CIFS" module (rather than
"smbfs") and then mounted the remote filesystem using the regular busybox
"mount" command with the "-t cifs" option. So far, the CIFS implementation
appears to result in a reliable remote client. I thought this was worth
repeating, because in my google searching, it seems as if there is a lack of
awareness that smbfs is obsolete.
