I use Linux in a VM all the time for this purpose. As for which distro, I end up using Ubuntu because it seems to be gaining support over red hat and I am used to it, but for each person you ask you will probably get a different answer. I recommended you try and use Linux for as much as possible so you gain familiarity with it and the tools. --Jim
