This is a very valid concern. I too have to install Broadcom NIC drivers manually on my Acer Laptop. I typically keep the .pkg on on USB disk and install OSS + NIC drivers post installation. I have setup sound and ethernet on my machine this way for the last 3-4 SXDE installs. Ashwin, It might make sense for you to download broadcom drivers from the manufacturer's site and transfer it to your friend's laptop via some removable media. I guess one can still install SysV packages in Indiana (Correct me if I am wrong). As for me, unfamiliarity with IPS is preventing me from formatting my (perfectly setup and working) SXDE 1/08 on my laptop.
