MISS WORLD. OH, OH,
Listen You Person at:[EMAIL PROTECTED],
I cannot be
held in blasphemy because you have an inverted sense of good and bad.
First of all, since when did I know you, or your email address to have
you on my list? You do not know the difference between a group mail and a
direct mail or there is no Sharia code against lack of distinction and
trespasses?
I think the taliban gave you all a false sense of
invincibility and the intolerant nuts amongst you are going haywire, using
religion as a new dictatorial tool. Coupled with pure small mindedness, the
long reign of Abokism added to the divine right to rule. Holy cows!!
Man, all you have to do is use your groundnut sense, a natural
resource, and ask whether in regions where you have multiple faiths, there is
any Koran passage that gives Muslim radio-activists the audacity to hold any
town hostage? Religion is personal, the politicalization of it is the crux of
the matter. It should have no place in the conduct of public affairs.
In Turkey, a devout Muslim, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a former member of
the radical Islamic party - Welfare has to declare his secular intents to
negotiate access to power, even though he is the chairperson of the victorious
Justice and Development Party in the recent elections. He was banned from
holding political office for reciting a poem that was viewed as inciting
religious hatred. Africa cannot insulate herself from basic rights and expect
to be accepted in a comity of normal persons. The religious commotion and
corrosion in Muslim controlled territories is insidious and inimical to the
health of a nation. Or you think Christians abandoned Jesus?
Sharia as
practiced in Nigeria is a foxhole. Wrap that nonsense in your turbans for your
wives or concubines or that nation risks a bloody split.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chat-AfriK] MISS
WORLD. WHAT HAPPENED?
Africans on the Net:
How
did all these happen? The open sore was right there. Nigeria has been
suffering from bipolar disorder ever since Hausa men had to adjust to not
ruling. I must add, not all Hausas are Muslims and there are non-Hausas
who are Muslims, like the late Abiola from Yoruba. Whatever the
exceptions, it boils down to Abokis not being unaccustomed in the
periphery of issues. So they created and energized their own center, the
enigmatic Sharia Republics. They puff indignant and tacitly empower
hoodlums to run amok at real or imagined scenarios. President Obasanjo is
caught between and besides himself. C'mon, it is either or. Either you
want to promote tourism or worldliness, neither of which has stoning women
to death for any reason as a feature attraction, or you accept this herd
mentality which has no relationship to tantalizing effects of beauty
contests. Spare yourself the lousy impotence.
One thing has just
crossed my mind before I continue. I do not believe this people still
"piss and drink " from the same kettle or do they? Okay, there is a paper
in Nigeria called ThisDay. One provocateur, Isioma Daniel, exercising some
version of free speech opined that Prophet Mohammed himself would have
married one of the beauty contestants. Hell broke loose. That was in
Kaduna. But the show, scheduled for December 7, was to take place in
Abuja.
People tell me. How does that paper and institution
translate to irrational mayhem in streets? The office was burned down,
should that not have been the eye for an eye? And the government. Who has
ever heard of an African civilian population challenging government and
disturbing the peace without a crack down -- mightily, including
disappearances? That street would have been deserted in a Lagos minute. So
fast before you blink. If we can contain the Ogonis who are asking for
their right to benefit from their resources and hanging Sero Wiwa, how
come we become powerless?
Does any one think in the days of
Buhari, Babagaginda or Abacha they would have allowed a tomfoolery like
who can a prophet marry to depict Nigeria in naked light, deprive it of
bikini spectacle, an occasion to demonstrate advancement in civility,
divert attentions from other worrying issues, hassle and cajole investors,
and the much touted tourism? No way!!. Kaduna could have been locked up.
The stakes would be too high. Nigeria forgot dawn to dusk curfew?
Impossible.
This hoopla and spill over of the beauty contest is
merely symptomatic of an intractable malaise of a law unto itself within a
law. People will argue that in the US, state laws differ. Sure they do.
But with that liberty to determine comes responsibility to ensure law and
order. When a state tinkers at the brink of insanity, it is not unheard of
for federal authority to step in. Uncle Sege, for all our hopes as
an African Statesman, can be reducible to spinelessness. Some beauty
contestants demonstrated more timber and caliber by denouncing the Sharia
idea of killing someone because she had a baby out of wedlock. South
Africa, Costa Rica, Denmark, Switzerland, South Africa and Panama
contestants stayed home, did not show up out of conviction. For example,
could they have killed one of Abacha's circle of prostitutes who happened
to be a Muslim residing in that area? Just wondering whether the old
cattle network cover their tracks.
But the salient question here
is not beauty contests and lament that the show was moved to London.
Rather, the ominous probe is whether a region should hold a nation at
ransom for any reason? Beauty contests can come and go, but do people have
to put up with the inclinations and ramifications of Sharia ripple effects
on a nation? What if soccer teams were assembling for a world cup match
and someone decided Jesus could have admired the buttocks of Kanu? Do the
Christians riot and loose the chance to host a world cup? So where does
the center hold?
We are all for religion. Islam is a peaceful
religion. But for all intent and purposes, our functional illiterate
brethens are using religion as a sword to avenge the void of displacement,
to assuage their own pitiful demons. They need to feel in control even to
the point of out of control. The story has a bigger frame. It's not about
beauty contests. Beauty pageants are held in Nigeria from time immemorial
because we have Nigerian contestants. Any determined governor could have
controlled that crowd. A northern president could not have hesitated to
crack down -- north, south, east or west.
A human failing, the
calculating political equation, nothing to do with Allah.
