Adrisi arrest revoked-New Vision 7/12/2002

By Hillary Kiirya

Former vice-president Mustafa Adrisi is a lucky man. As the doors to Luzira Prisons were about to open for him, Justice Patrick Tabaro of the High Court revoked Adrisis arrest order last week.

In an internal memo to Non-Performing Assets Recovery Trust (NPART) assistant registrar, Tabaro instructed NPART auctioneers to find other ways of recovering the money instead of committing dictator Idi Amins former deputy to civil prison.

Adrisi received a sh14.8m loan from Uganda Commercial Bank in 1995, which he failed to pay. The loan has accumulated to over sh30m because of interest.

The NPART assistant registrar on October 29 ordered the arrest of Adrisi after he failed to appear before the tribunal to explain why he should not be committed to civil prison for the default.

In the memo, Tabaro advised the auctioneers to attach one of Adrisis houses in Lira to recover the money.
