Deadline For Peace In W. Nile

THE government and Uganda National Rescue Front II (UNRFII) rebels have agreed on a nine-day deadline beginning tomorrow (Monday) within which to reach a compromise as the two parties prepare to sign a peace agreement.
�We held discussions on the way forward and agreed on a programme to expedite the peace process leading to a final peace settlement,� read a joint statement issued by Gender Minister Zoe Bakoko-Bakoru and UNRFII Chairman Maj. Gen. Bamuze in Arua on Friday.
According to sources, the programme involves the demobilisation and resettlement of former combatants.
The joint communiqu� refuted reports that there was rebel tension in the districts of Arua, Nebbi and Pakwach. It said the population was going about its normal business.
In another development, UNRF II Second-in-command, Antes Asedri Oyemi, is under arrest following an incident in which Brig. Kale Kaihura was held at gunpoint recently by the rebels in Yumbe.
Kaihura, a member of the UPDF High Command, was at the rebel camp at Bidi Bidi to deliver a peace message from the President.
