KAMPALA, 24 January 2003 The WFP says northern Uganda is facing its worst humanitarian crisis.
KAMPALA: The United Nations World Food Program, or WFP, says northern Uganda is facing its worst humanitarian crisis since rebels took up arms against the government 16 years ago.
The WFP says the number of displaced people needing food in the region has risen from 520 000 to 800 000 since last July.
This comes as fighting has intensified between the Ugandan army and the rebel Lord's Resistance Army, or LRA.
About 70% of the people living in Uganda's northern districts of Gulu, Kitgum and Padar are estimated to have been displaced by insecurity.
This has prevented farmers from planting and harvesting crops.
