Agathe was a dynamic leader who campaigned courageously in
her country for pluralism and for equal access to Education for
Girls.
Her efforts to reconcile warring factions, her fight against
ethnic polarity, and her courage in resisting adversity were lifelong
values.
A former teacher in a Girls' Secondary School and a dedicated
educationalist, Agathe demonstrated great concern for gender issues and
relationships in Rwanda.
Agathe was determined. "Uwilingiyimana"
means One who puts confidence in God. She was the second woman
Prime Minister in Africa. At the time of her death, this great woman was
preparing a speech to deliver to the bewildered people of Rwanda, concerning
the tragic death of President Habyarimana of Rwanda and President Cyprien
Ntaryamira of Burundi. They both died when their plane was shot down. She was
killed just two days later.
