The Democratic Republic of Congo: it's anything but democratic. But that pattern was set a long time ago by people who never lived in Africa.

When it was called the Congo Free State, it was terrorized and plundered by order of King Leopold of Belgium.

When it was called Zaire, it became the personal cash machine of the kleptocrat Mobutu Sese Seko.

It's long been a republic of pain and dark parallels with other former colonial outposts of The Francophonie.

With that sense of history on his mind, reporter Sylvain Desjardins of Radio-Canada arrives in the capital.

And a program note -- the CBC begins a week of programming about Congo starting this weekend on "The Sunday Edition," and on the Radio-Canada program "Dimanche."
