Inmates Narrate Snakes Torture
By Edith Kimuli
INMATES at Kigo Prison yesterday shed tears as they narrated the alleged torture they went through at the hands of the military before they were taken to court.
Lt. Dan Mugarura, one of the inmates, said he was forced to accept that he communicated with Col. Kizza Besigye, Col. Mande and other suspected rebels, as he faced snakes in a place he could not tell.
He said he was not a Besigye collaborator. He said he could not tell where the snakes were being kept because he was blind-folded.
"Nyombi Tembo, didn't I give you people (Movement) 1,000 litres of fuel during the campaigns? Now you people say I am a Besigye collaborator," Mugarura said.
The inmates were speaking to MPs who visited the prison to find out if treason suspects were being tortured by snakes and crocodiles.
The allegations were made in Parliament last week.
John Kazoora (Kashari) told the House that treason suspects were being threatened by snakes and crocodile to extract confession.
Michael Mabikke (Makindye East) said part of the defence budget was being used to buy snakes and crocodiles for torturing treason suspects.
The LC3 chairperson Bungatira, Tonny Kitara, told MPs on defence and internal affairs committee that there were snakes in Gulu barracks where he had been tortured.
Other inmates said a cage at the CMI headquarters looked like that of a dog, but "about six people are forced into the same and it is filled with water, forcing them to confess or suffocate."
They talked of stones being tied around their testes. A woman said she was gang-raped by male suspects, who included soldiers, in Gulu barracks.
