Netters,

this is not the first time that New Vision, out of whatever motive, tries to intentionally ferment discord among the Baganda by distorting the truth. The Bukedde article about the same issue seems to paint a more truthful picture (although their heading - it talks of buying the Butikkiro - does not reflect the content of the body text). Bukedde talks about a draft of a lease agreement over 49 years between the Central government and Mengo. In actual fact, this is simply a formalization of the status quo and nothing very new. The Central Government and Mengo have been in a tenant-landlord relationship of the Butikkiro since the restoration of the Kingdom (those in the know can tell us whether the Government has kept up with the rent payments).
So, to report as if this is an outright sell of the Butikkiro is, to say the least, being dishonest.

I doubt that Ssaabasajja Mutebi II would strip Buganda of its culture for the ephemeral shilliing!

Mutebi wants Butikkiro sold off
By Josephine Maseruka
Kabaka Ronald Mutebi has directed Katikkiro Joseph Ssemwogerere to draft an agreement spelling out the terms on which the Government will buy Butikkiro, the official residence of Bugandas prime minister (Katikkiro).
The directive was contained in a letter issued recently by Mutebis principal private secretary, Ambassador William Matovu.
Sources close to Mengo said Matovu at first verbally communicated to Ssemwogerere who demanded a written directive on such a contentious matter like the Butikkiro.
Sources further said Mutebi wants a speedy conclusion of the deal that could mature anytime this week. It was reported that the Government valuers have already inspected Butikkiro.
The Government has for sometime negotiated with Mengo over the sale and it proposed to pay over sh200m as accumulated rent for its occupation since 1993.
No agreement had earlier been made following strong resistance from traditionalists and the Mengo officials.
The Government had further proposed to build a modern Butikkiro near Lubiri SSS.
The idea also met stiff resistance due to mistrust between Mengo and the Government. Some queried governments sincerity since it is yet to honour the sh1b pledge to complete Twekobe.
