Sudhir firm defying NEMA
BIRD SANCTUARY: The white-winged black terns that migrate from Europe in winter
THE National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has said Rosebud, a flower firm owned by Sudhir Ruparelia, has defied orders to restore part of Lutembe bay, reports Gerald Tenywa.
The wetlands that make up the bay on the shore of Lake Victoria form a bird sanctuary.
Rosebud also wants to have another part of the bay in its massive expansion move for the cultivation of flowers.
This has provoked outrage from NEMA and leading environmental advocacy groups, Uganda Wildlife Society, Nature Uganda and Green Watch.
Rosebud, which owns land near the bay, is accused of encroaching on the bay, a habitat for the entire population of migratory birds, the white-winged black terns.
Dr. Aryamanya Mugisha, the executive director of NEMA, said Rosebud had used excavated murram from a nearby hill and pushed it into the wetland.
Mugisha said NEMA gave the flower firm two months to restore the wetland to as near as possible to its original state.
However, NEMA agreed to negotiate with Rosebud and declined to take punitive action when time for restoration ran out on July 28.
Mugisha said Rosebud gave NEMA a report after an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), in which the firm proposed to have more land in the wetland.
