KAMPALA The Aids Support Organisation, Taso, will be honoured in the United States next week.
Taso is listed for the Global Humanitarian Award Honouree on October 8 in New York.
The Taso Executive Director, Dr Godwin Coutinho, will receive the award from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and U2 lead vocalist Bono.
The United Nations Association of the USA is giving the Global Humanitarian Award Honouree at the Sheraton hotel in New York.
[Coutinho] is highly respected around the world for what Taso has managed to achieve against all odds, a clip from the associations Web site reads.
Coutinho told journalists yesterday in his office at Mulago that Taso is being recognised for its role in fighting HIV/Aids from a civil societys point of view and for the organisations contribution to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Taso is one of the oldest non-governmental organisations giving care and support to those infected and affected by HIV/Aids and has become a training centre for many countries.
Since its inception in 1987, Taso has had 82,000 beneficiaries of its counselling and care services.
Mr Annan will also posthumously bestow the Global Humanitarian Action Award upon Vieira de Mello, his special envoy to Iraq, who was killed in a bomb attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad in August.
Also due for recognition is Mr Henry A. Mckinnell Jr., the chief executive officer of the US pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer.
He will receive the 2003 Global Award Honouree for his commitment to Aids care and treatment, especially in Africa.
Pfizer has, among other gestures, funded the multi-million dollar Academic Alliance at Makerere University Medical School to train African doctors and nurses in Aids care.
Pfizer is also behind the newly completed Taso headquarters at Mulago Hospital, as well as the establishment of the International HIV/Aids Health Literacy Grants.
