PARLIAMENT Swedish government officials gave Aruu County MP Odonga Otto the cold shoulder during his visit to the Scandinavian country two weeks ago.
Mr Otto had gone to Stockholm hoping to persuade the government there to stop supporting Uganda.
He also wanted to ask the Swedish authorities to urge the warring parties in northern Uganda to cease hostilities.
We were so disappointed it was really a hard rock to crack, Otto told journalists at Parliament yesterday.
The former Bishop of Kitgum, the Rt. Rev. Baker Ochola, accompanied the MP to Sweden. Otto said that the Swedish government believes President Museveni is a role model in Africa.
He said that Sweden could not listen to anyone trying to taint the Presidents image.
You know Museveni stayed there for sometime. They think he is one of their own, Otto said.
The Presidents family lived in exile in Sweden during the National Resistance Army guerilla war in the early 1980s.
Otto only managed to get an assurance that a Swedish team would come to Uganda to assess the situation in northern Uganda and report to the authorities back home.
Otto said that he wanted to persuade the Swedish government to both act as a third party or to propose a neutral venue for peace talks between the rebel Lords Resistance Army and the government.
He also wanted to persuade Sweden to ask for intervention by the UN to save the lives of the one million displaced persons in northern Uganda.
The LRA has been fighting in northern Uganda since 1988 leading to devastating loss in life and property. |
