President Yoweri Museveni, has addressed the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), reports Anne Mugisa.

Lt. Gen. Museveni, who camped in Soroti to oversee military operations against the Lord's Resistance Army rebels, commended the soldiers for putting up tight resistance against Joseph Kony's rebels in the Teso sub-region.

Museveni, who is the Commander-In-Chief of the UPDF addressed the soldiers on Wednesday.

A statement from State House yesterday said he particularly thanked the soldiers for beating off three ambushes that had been staged by the rebels.

The soldiers did not suffer major injuries during the encounters.

Museveni urged them to keep alert and physically fit.

The statement said the President

emphasised the importance of communication and quick mobility in confrontation with the enemy.

The Kony war, which has raged on for 17 years, has forced thousands of people in the war-ravaged northern Uganda into internally displaced people's camps.

The UPDF has fought the rebels and liberated hundreds of abductees.

Kony is still hesitant to negotiate peace with the Presidential Peace Commission. Previous attempts have failed.
