All primary schools to get kits
The Ministry of Education has purchased science equipment worth Sh270 million to be distributed to 18,000 primary schools countrywide.
Chief Principal, Mr Patrick Kibui, of Kenya Science Teachers College said the equipment was acquired from the institution's science equipment production unit.
Addressing journalists in Nairobi, Kibui also announced that the institutions graduation ceremony will be held on November 11.
He said the science kit was developed by teachers at the institution and each of the sets contained 130 scientific pieces.
The principal noted there was acute shortage of science teachers in the country saying it was not possible for diploma graduates from the college to be deployed to teach in primary schools.
He said the shortage was occasioned by retirement, deaths and other factors pointing out that if graduates from the college were to be deployed to primary schools, the training they got would have to be adjusted.
The principal further revealed that the college had started training computer science teachers for secondary schools.
The trend, he said, was influenced by the realization that information technology was now of great importance and it had to be taught in most institutions.
Acting General manager of the science unit at the college, Mr S Muite, said the Government had ordered for the kits to be distributed to all primary schools in the country.
He said the science unit was also making science equipment for secondary schools, adding that each would cost of Sh100,000.
Kibui said the Government's move to acquire the science kits would go a long way to ensure quality teaching of sciences.
The principal said the institution needed more than Sh30 million to run effectively adding that the Government had given it a grant of Sh17 million this year. The rest of the funds will be raised from the Sh26,000 school fees that each student pays per year.
