A member of Uganda Women Writers Association (FEMRITE), Jackie Budesta Batanda, has won this year's Commonwealth Regional Short Story Competition.
Her winning story entitled, "Dance With Me" talks about Lanyero, a girl staying in a displaced people's camp in Lacor in Northern Uganda.
One night, she goes out to dance with friends but during the evening out she unfortunately loses one of her legs, which is blown off by a landmine, planted by rebels of Joseph Kony's Lords Resistence Army.
Batanda's story of war and how women who are not the perpetrators of war get caught up in its midst, is a story of pain, lost hope and finally hope regained.
Batanda is a creative writing fellow on Crossing borders, an African Writers' Mentoring Scheme run by the British Council.
She is a student at Makerere University and the General Secretary of FEMRITE.
