The army at the weekend said it is deploying more troops in Lira following fresh rebel attacks in which about 80 people have died in the past two weeks.
The latest attack was on Friday. The Lord's Resistance Army rebels killed eight people at Alio Catholic Mission, 18 km northeast of Lira town.
"We are urgently moving on the terrorists who have infiltrated Lira of recent," the regional spokesman of the UPDF 4 and 5 infantry divisions, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, told The Monitor yesterday.
The Missionary News Agency-Misna reported yesterday that "a parish priest of Aloi, Father Andrew Okeny, who left his mission to accompany some casualties to Aloi Hospital, counted five bodies along the road and confirmed three others dead."
Ankuda said: "Lango has been attacked regularly and it is true scores of people have been killed."
Local sources said the rebels last week killed about 60 people in the same district. But the army put the death toll at 42.
The war has been raging since 1988.
