Exiled former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye has urged Bakiga to continue fighting bad leaders.

"You must fight fearlessly to defend your country from these bad and dictatorial leaders, never fear a leopard, it's just the hairs only. I appreciate your efforts towards fighting for democracy," Besigye said in a message delivered by his wife Ms Winnie Byanyima.

The Mbarara municipality MP was speaking at the give away ceremony of the daughter of a Kabale businessman, Mr Peter Niwagaba.

The ceremony was at Niwagaba's home in Kabale municipality at the weekend.

Besigye, a losing candidate in the 2001 presidential election, is now exiled in South Africa.

Hundreds of people attended the function including Kabale municipality boss Pius Ruhemurana and MPs Jack Sabiiti (Rukiga), Henry Banyenzaki (Rubanda West) and Avitus Tibarimbasa (Ndorwa East).

"We are just waiting for the year 2006 to show that we love the ideas of your husband. We are ready to support you despite the harassment," one guest said.

On her part, Byanyima advised the Bakiga to join hands and fight some leaders who have turned the country into their daily garden.

She said such leaders are draining the nation's coffers at the expense of the local people. Byanyima dismissed as false claims that she had fled the country.

"I am here and nobody should deceive you," she said before handing over Shs 200,000 to the bride and groom Catherine Kyarimpa and Nelson Mashilingi.
