ABOUT 20 suspected armed Congolese thugs on Tuesday attacked Tonya landing site on Lake Albert in Hoima district and robbed over 20 boats and millions of shillings from Ugandan fishermen.

The midwestern regional Police commander, Grace Turyagumanawe and the Hoima district Police commander, Sam Otim Emokok, said the robbery took place in the middle of the waters.

Police sources told The New Vision yesterday that the security personnel at the lakeshores were reinforced to beef up security following the incident.

Other security sources said an unknown number of people were abducted during the raids.

Emokok said the armed gunmen also robbed fishing nets and money from the victims.

"We highly suspect that the thugs crossed from the DR Congo and later went back but we are doing everything possible to put the situation under control," he said.

The area Member of Parliament, Henry Kajura, expressed worry over the continued abduction of people on the lake.

Kajura attributed the problem to the big influx of illegal immigrants from the neighbouring Congo.
