GOVERNMENT has directed immediate evacuation and resettlement of over 3,000 internally displaced persons living in four floating Islands on Lake Kyoga.
State minister for disaster preparedness and refugees Christine Amongin issued the directive on Sunday at Lela floating Island on Lake Kyoga.
"The Government has known and has seen that you are suffering. But now I have to speak authoritatively on behalf of the Government that you must leave these floating islands in order to avert a disaster," Amongin said.
She said people living in Lela, Sangai, Apongu and Owidi floating Islands would be resettled in the stationery islands of Awer and parts of Kasilo county in Soroti district and Kumi.
The islands are soft and easily move with strong winds.
Amongin, accompanied by the Teso Parliamentary Group chairman Patrick Amuriat and Woman MP for Kaberamaido Mary Amajo, delivered an assortment of food and non-food aid items from the Prime Ministers Office, Uganda Breweries, Novo Enterprises in Soroti and a donation of second hand clothes from some Islanders in Iganga district.
