LIRA DISTRICT: REBELS KILL 14 WOMEN
Fourteen women were killed by the rebels of the LRA (lordâs Resistance Army) in the village of Teoballe, situated in the area of Orum, around 60km from Lira, administrative centre of the homonymous district of North Uganda. The news was referred to MISNA by two eyewitnesses who escaped the massacre. Based on the testimony of the survivors, the victims were living in some of the âprotected campsâ of the zone, where the military is supposed to guarantee the security of the people, and had gone to the Teoballe village in search of food. In the village the women encountered the LRA rebels, who did not hesitate to kill them. The episode occurred January 13, but the bodies of the victims are still lying on the scene of the massacre. Since 1986 the rebels commanded by Joseph Kony have been devastating the northern districts of Uganda: according to local sources, in 17 years of terror they have killed and tortured tens of thousands of people (at least 100-thouand dead), abducted over 25-thousand children (reduced to slavery or forcedly enrolled in the rebels lines) and caused the displacement of over 1-million people.
