4 varsities shut down

THE National Council for Higher Education has shut down Nakaseke, Kabale, Mbale Elgon and Fairland universities.

The council also deferred issuing operating licenses to five other universities, including the Kampala International University (KIU), in a crackdown on sub-standard higher institutions of learning.

The council met on Thursday last week and directed the four universities to transfer students to recognised universities.

Prof. Frederick Kayanja, the Vice-Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, who chairs the council, confirmed the meeting.

Kayanja said it was only the executive director, Prof. A.B.K. Kazosi, who could disclose details of the meeting.

Kasozi said he would discuss the issue after dispatching letters to the affected institutions.

But a source said the council deferred granting a license to KIU on grounds that it has glaring weaknesses c entred around its governance, which it must rectify.

The council granted charters to Uganda Christian University, Mukono and the Uganda Management Institute.
