Movement cannot organise free polls
In Let's Celebrate The Polls Instead (See: The Monitor, January 29), Mr George Kibumba asks, "Why don't we begin to celebrate the day when, through fairly peaceful means, the Movement retained the presidency?" As things are now, we may never realise this as long as it is the Movement, in its current composition, in governance.
Considering the general trend of behaviour and actions of Movement leaders right from its Chairman, it would be very surprising if the Government ever allowed a fair, peaceful and civilised presidential and /or parliamentary election.
The majority of the Movement leaders have grown and lived through and by violent means. Few of them have nurtured the culture of civilised competition, which is the cornerstone for holding free and fair elections.
Those of them who are not comfortable with this kind of behaviour are now being vilified by, not only the Chairman, but also his sycophants who hardly have a name to talk about. So Mr Kibumba, we can only hope to achieve your wish if, and only if, you mobilise more Ugandans to say a big NO to the "Sad Term Project". If nationals of other countries have foiled such projects, why can't we? Let's go for it.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."
- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
