Odious Debt: Review of African $300 Billion Debt

Review of Debt of African Countries

Digital Aid Inc. and African Foundation are organizing a
petition drive aimed at the reduction of the debt owed by
African countries.

As you may be aware, President George Bush recently sent his
special Envoy on post-war Iraq (Secretary George Baker) to meet
with various heads of states seeking reduction/cancellation
in the huge $120B debt owed by Iraq. Indeed, George Baker is
in the Middle East again this week and has just secured a
commitment this afternoon (January 20, 2004) from Qatar and
the UAE to cancel at least $4B in Iraqi debt. The rationale
of the Bush administration in seeking this debt cancellation
is that this debt is an albatross that will prevent the
emergence of a free, liberated and vibrant Iraq.

We as Africans feel that this standard needs to be applied
to Africa as the African debt predicament is by any measure
far more severe than that of Iraq and is in fact the most
severe in the world.

We have set a goal of at least 10,000 signatures on this
petition and urge you to visit the following website to
sign the petition:

http://www.digitalaid.org/debt.htm. It is a simple one to
two minute process.

This is a topical issue and we intend to use this climate
to force discourse and action on the African debt issue.
Press releases and media interviews to give the petition
wide publicity are planned. Of course, this is contingent
upon our meeting the goal of 10,000 signatures.

Please sign it now and forward to everyone on your
distribution list.

Many Thanks.
