Buganda clan leaders have asked president Yoweri Museveni to give more powers to the Kabaka.They said Kabaka Mutebi needed more power to effectively run his kingdom instead of depending on charity.
The leaders said they had been criticised for saying the Kabaka was given 'byooya bya nswa' (something without any value).Led by their chairman, Frank Mbaziira, they made the remarks on Thursday when they met the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, at his Kakiri residence.
A detailed memorandum presented by Grace Nduggwa Ssemakula said the Kabaka was so powerless that he could hardly authorise anything in his kingdom.Ssemakula added that former Buganda kings had great power over their people that compelled even the lazy Baganda to work."Such power was the main factor for Buganda's fast development then.
The Kabaka was the overall and those who disobeyed him were severely punished and others imprisoned," he said.He said the power to handle inheritance matters was scrapped from the Kabaka and left to the Administrator General.Bukenya assured the clan leaders that he would convey their request to the president.
He added that the Kabaka's statement was quite timely and important.Prior to their meeting Bukenya attended the Buganda parliamentary caucus where members had decided to meet the Kabaka and the president over federo and development in Buganda.
