20,000 IDPs go home

AT least 20,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in Soroti district have returned to their homes.

District disaster committee chairperson George Omuge on Thursday said most of the IDPs were from the neighbouring districts of Katakwi and Kaberamaido.

He said recent reports of stability in those areas had prompted the IDPs to return to their homes.

Omuge added that an estimated 500,000 IDPs had been displaced due to the Lord�s Resistance Army 18-year-old insurgency in northern uganda.

He said the recent voluntary return of the IDPs would reduce congestion in the camps.

�We have decided to resettle the remaining ones in a more specious place with better facilities,� Omuge said.

Museveni has no jobs � Byaruhanga

By Solomon Muyita THE President�s private secretary for political affairs, Moses Byaruhanga (right), has advised people to stop looking up to the president to give them jobs. addressing youth leaders at Kyakatebe Primary School in Mubende Byaruhanga recently said, �President Yoweri Museveni only gives out political posts like to 20 ambassadors, 56 RDCs and the 62 ministerial posts, out of the 24 million Ugandans.� �Even the Public Service has only 300,000 jobs, including teachers, the police, prisons and the medical workers,�� he added. Byaruhanga advised people to stop focussing on government jobs and concentrate on the private sector for employment. Byaruhanga urged the unemployed to also target the foreign market by growing high-value crops in large quantities, adding that the local market had less to offer.
