Cop Sues Tinyefuza
A POLICE officer on Tuesday told court that he was undressed, beaten and detained at Makindye Military Barracks on the orders of Lt. Gen. David Tinyefuza, reports Florence Nakaayi.
Cpl. Peter Okalang told Justice Julia Ssebutinde at the High Court, Kampala, that Tinyefuza issued the orders at Kabalagala Police Station on March 15, 2002 at around 4:00am.
Okalang, who was heading a crew of Patrol Police, said Tinyefuza got annoyed when he arrived at the station and found commotion.
He said Tinyefuza, who was not in uniform, was leaning on a special hire vehicle. Immediately he saw them he allegedly said, You Police, who has called you here? I called my soldiers from Military Police. Let them come you will see. Have you saluted me? How can a corporal question a lieutenant general?
Okalang said he did not know who Tinyefuza was till a friend told him.
Okalang, of the Central Police Station, filed a suit against the Attorney General and Tinyefuza for damages.
Tinyefuza was not in court and did not defend himself.
Okalangs lawyer, Elias Lukwago, said his client wanted sh60m in damages.
He said the Attorney Generals office was willing to settle the matter out of court.
Okalang said after release, Tinyefuza called them to his home in Kyengera to apologise.
The case was adjourned to April 26.
