The Prof. and indeed the government should be clear on what they want the religious leaders to do or not do. When Cardinal Wamala opposes the third term, he is intefering in politics yet the Mufti is now being asked to support the third term!!!
The Prof. should surely live above this kind of cheap politics. Support 3rd term VP urges Muslims By Henry H. Ssali June 1, 2004 WAKISO - Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has asked Muslim leaders to support President Yoweri Museveni for a third term. Mufti, I am asking you to help us when we say we should add this man five years. They are too few, Bukenya pleaded. Prof Gilbert Bukenya hands over a copy of the constitution to chief Audu Ogbel, the head of the Nigerian ruling Party in Entebbe. (Phot by VPPU) He was meeting a delegation of Muslim clerics led by the Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, district Khadis and the executive committee of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council at his country home in Kakiri yesterday. He told the clerics that although they are religiuos leaders, they were the right people to guide their flock on who should be their political leader. He commended the Muslims for reconciling their factions and being united since Mubajje took office three and a half years ago. The Muslims requested that Museveni should consult Mubajje while looking for Muslims to appoint to government posts. Bukenya promised to convey their message to the president. I will see the president tomorrow and tell him that when we need a Muslim, we call the Mufti, he said. However, Mubajje had earlier told Bukenya that, as religious leaders, they do not interfere in politics. Our policy as the Supreme Council is non- interference We dont want to get involved in politics, he said. He reasoned that he heads a diverse flock and directing them in politics would lead to divisions since they had different political affiliations. But Bukenya requested him to market Museveni and the Movement among the Muslim community. Mubajje asked the Government to give Muslims a fair share of the national cake. 2004 The Monitor Publications \\\\\\\"Always be a first rate version of yourself instead of a second rate version of someone else.\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Njoki Paul University of Pretoria -------------------------------------------- This service is hosted on the Infocom network http://www.infocom.co.ug
