THE Vatican is to convene a donors' conference to lobby for help to alleviate
humanitarian crises in northern Uganda and elsewhere in Africa.
The meeting will include ambassadors and principal donors accredited to the Holy See.
The President of the Pontifical Council on Justice and Peace, Cardinal Rafaele Martino
(blessing Christians above), said at yesterday's commemoration of the Uganda martyrs
at Namugongo that the world needed to pay more attention to the suffering Africans.
"Countless human beings on the African continent are living a helpless life because
there is no hand to lend help. I had the privilege of visiting the internally
displaced people in the north, where I came face to face with the social reality of
your country.

There are so many faces crying out for help and need compassionate and generous people
who are convinced that the suffering of others directly concerns them," Cardinal
Martino told the congregation that included the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya.
"Do not stand and look on as a flame burns at your neighbours. You should go and help
them put it out because tomorrow it could be you," Cardinal Martino said.
