Federo debate is hypocritical The Mengo establishment is at it again. The federo issue is becoming a volatile political issue and a means for every Tom, Dick and Harry to climb the political ladder to exploit the masses. Its proponents have not raised genuine or sincere views on the subject, but hypocritical ones. Imagine even UPC, which overthrew the system is now supporting the demands. Buganda is a key issue in Uganda politics and should jealously maintain such a privileged position. It should not trade off its demand for federo with opportunistic politicians. The Mengo establishment should convince the majority of Ugandans that the system is the best option for the country; that its not sectarian and an attempt to turn the clock anti-clockwise. The government must also sensitise the populace about the fruits of decentralisation; tell the people that it does not only bring decision making nearer to the people but maintains the much cherished national unity, thus keeping the country as one entity. If we are to go federo, the government must first ensure practical regional balance in terms of development and resource distribution to avoid arrogance and antagonism between more developed and less developed regions.
