Buganda may secede Kazibwe

WHEW! Buganda Speaker Muhabubah Semakula on Friday after asking faithfuls at Kibuli Mosque to pray for Federo

By Henry Mukasa
FORMER vice-president Dr. Specioza Kazibwe has said the demand for a mighty Buganda headed by a political Kabaka might be a plot for the kingdom to secede from Uganda.

Speaking on Star FM on Friday, Kazibwe said, Uganda cannot afford a political Kabaka. If they (Mengo) want a political king, they want to break Buganda away from Uganda, Kazibwe said.

Kazibwe said because of Bugandas presumed special status some delegates in the Constituent Assembly wanted Uganda renamed the Nile State.

She said that Baganda lobbied her to support federo during the constitution making process because she is married to a Muganda.

Kazibwe was reacting to Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Mutebi IIs assertion during a Federo workshop on Friday that Bugandas demand for Federo was for a mighty Buganda and its development as well as that of Uganda.

Also reacting to the Kabakas speech, DP Movement caucus chairman, Kassiano Wadri (Tere go) said, The Baganda must be towing a hidden agenda. It seems they want to secede. He said Mengo should separate its demand for federalism from monarchism.

Patrick Amuriat (Kumi) said the kingdom and advocates of federalism should take time to educate Ugandans on Federo.
Movement spokesman, Ofwono Opondo said Mengo might have a good cause but it is using a wrong postal address to lobby the President. They should be lobbying district councils and MPs, he said.

Nathan Byanyima (Bukanga) said the Kabakas statement was very good. He cooled tempers, he said.
Emmanuel Dombo (Bunyole) said Buganda had been marginalised by past governments and negotiations between Mengo and Cabinet should continue.

National Democrats Forum president Chapa Karuhanga said his party was pro-federalism and if we were in power tomorrow we would give Mengo what they want.
