Tories want troops in Sudan 'within days'
BRITISH troops should be sent to Sudan "in a matter of days" unless there is an improvement in the countryâs humanitarian crisis, the Tories said today. Shadow international development secretary John Bercow said diplomatic efforts were "too little and too late" and intervention would be needed. Pro-government Arab militias in Sudan are accused of slaughtering thousands in a campaign to drive out black African farmers that the United States Congress has described as genocide. One million people are estimated to have fled their homes. Asked how soon UK forces should be deployed, Mr Bercow said: "I think within a matter of days if there is not evidence of improvement. Unless there is evidence of real change, I believe international action in the name of humanity is needed. All the evidence shows that the government of Sudan responds only to pressure, pressure, pressure and more pressure." -------------------------------------------- This service is hosted on the Infocom network http://www.infocom.co.ug
