The Democratic Party's National Vice Chairman Hajji Ali Sserunjogi has resigned from the DP post. Sserunjogi said he resigned in the interest of the party to pave way for progressive ideas in the DP to bear fruits.

But sources within the DP said he resigned after a disagreement with the party President Dr Kawanga Semogerere following a consultative meeting for district representatives he had called at Foundation for African Development offices, Makindye in which he invited former mayor Haji Nasser Sebaggala, former Secretary General Mariano Drametu and Mr Francis Bwengye.

"After due consultations, I have today, 28 resigned from the party leadership as the National vice chairman of DP," Serunjogi told The Monitor yesterday.

He said the reason he resigned was because Dr Semogerere, the Mayor John Ssebaana and other members of the mainstream DP blocked a consultative meeting he had organised for district representatives.

The meeting was to take place yesterday. Sserunjogi said he called all stakeholders to discuss the way forward for DP.

"They ordered for the closure of the apartment where the meeting was scheduled to take place and deployed security men at the gate " Sserunjogi said. He said he had resigned because he couldn't work in such confusion.

He said they had not held meetings for many years.

The DP Spokesman, Mr Jude Mbabaali said Sserunjogi's resignation is not valid until the National Executive Council meeting is convened.
