The notion that somehow UN troops would fight in Ituri forest of the DRC , is pretty much laughable!!!!!

The UN says it is sending additional troops to eastern DR Congo amid reports neighbouring Rwanda is threatening to target rebel groups in the country.

The head of the regional UN mission, William Swing, was also involved in intense talks with both sides to try to head off a further conflict, it added.

He was warned by Rwanda that an attack was imminent, a local UN official said.

Some of Rwanda's Hutu rebels who took part in the 1994 Tutsi genocide fled across the border to eastern DR Congo.

Chief UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said a deployment of an extra 5,900 troops - agreed last month - had begun.

QUICK GUIDE

There are already more than 10,000 UN peacekeepers patrolling the border area, and they have been put on alert.

Mr Eckhard said the deployment would bring additional security to the border area following Rwanda's reported threats.

"The mission's mandate includes preventing the DRC peace process from being derailed by spoilers from within and outside the DRC," he said from the UN's New York offices.

Disarm demands

The UN spokeswoman in Congo, Patricia Tome, said Mr Swing "received a call from a Rwandan official informing him there would be an attack very soon... by the Rwandan army on Congolese territory," the Associated Press news agency reported.

Rwanda has not confirmed such plans and so far there have been no confirmed reports of troops crossing the border.

Rwanda and DR Congo have waged several wars against each other, either directly or through proxy militias.

Rwanda has said repeatedly it will attack the camps of Hutu extremists if the government of DR Congo fails to disarm them.

The UN said the international community would not accept such threats and warned any action could undermine the fragile Congolese peace process.

The crisis comes as representatives of the UN Security Council complete a tour of the region to strengthen security measures.

A Rwandan representative told Reuters news agency that Hutu rebels were advancing towards the country and that Rwanda would be ready to see them off.

"There are a number of operations and mass movements of rebels towards our border," said Richard Sezibera, adviser to President Paul Kagame.

"We shall take whatever means it takes to protect our borders. Our response to provocation is that nothing is ruled in and nothing is ruled out."
