KAMPALA - Women lawyers want to petition the speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Ssekandi, over the Domestic Relations Bill. They said it is biased. Kampala Advocate and Facilitator of Uganda Network on Law and Ethics, Ms Irene Mulyagonja, said the lawyers would team up with Fida to defend womens rights as per the Constitution. She explained that parliaments attempts to pass the Domestic Relations Bill, which mandates men to marry more than one woman, but limits the women, is unfair. The constitution is very clear that we are all equal. If men are free to marry more than one wife, then women should also be free to marry more husbands, Mulyagonja told parliamentarians while presenting a paper at Hotel Africana on Saturday. She said the polygamists law was opposed to the constitutions recommendation that all people are equal. Mulyagonja said women traditionally accepted polygamy since it was the only way of acquiring wealth and land. The Kawempe North MP, Mr Latiff Ssebaggala, however opposed the argument, saying the law preserves African traditions and is appropriate since women out number men. Women are the majority. If we all practice monogamy, how will other women be catered for? Ssebaggala asked. |
