Politics/Economy Politics/Economy, Brief

Tension is rising along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo at the same time as Rwanda is reportedly positioning soldiers and military hardware along its frontier with ex Zaire. The pro-government newspaper New Vision reports fighting between one of the rebel groups in Ituri (the norteastern region of Congo on the border with Uganda) and members of the Peoples Redemption Army (PRA), a small anti-government formation. Jerome Kakwavu, leader of the Armed Forces of the Congolese People (FAPC), told the newspaper that he clashed with the Ugandan rebels near Omgbokoro-Ariwara, roughly 15 kilometres from the Ugandan border own of Koboko. We know that the rebels of Pra are currently in Congo, but for the time being there are just a few small gangs. However, we cannot ignore them and we will continue to take them one by one Ugandan army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza. Under t he three-way agreement signed with the government of Congo and Rwanda, we are authorised to track these rebels and capture them, he added.
