Politics/Economy Politics/Economy, Brief

Rwandan troops could be in Democratic Republic of Congo right now to track down the extremists responsible for the 1994 genocide hiding in the forest in the east of the neighbouring country, Rwandas President Paul Kagame has told the Kigali senate. Each time, the United Nations and the international community fail to disarm the Interahamwe and the ex FAR (the former Rwandan army: and so we will do it ourselves. It will not take a long time, it may already be happening, he said. Meanwhile new reports of Rwandan troops around Goma, capital of North Kivu, continue to arrive. Local government sources contacted by MISNA report that over 10.000 men including Rwandan soldiers and their allies are already in the area of Rutshuru. However, so far there has been no confirmation of these reports. up to now there has been nothing to back this information, Patricia Tom, communications officer for the UN mis sion in Congo (MONUC) told MISNA, however adding that the bluehelmets are nonetheless taking the reports and the rumours in circulation extremely seriously. A humanitarian source confirmed that MONUC has increased its patrols and presence in the border areas and is monitoring them closely.[LC]
