PRIEST AMBUSHED BY REBELS IN NORTH/NEW DETAILS
General General, Brief

Father Peter Olum, the priest who was ambushed by the rebels of the self-proclaimed LRA (Lords Resistance Army) this morning while driving with parishioners from Rackoko to Awere (north Uganda), where they were due to celebrate a baptism, risks losing his right hand, MISNA sources have said after visiting the priest in St. Mary of Lachor hospital in Gulu, 70 kilometres from the scene of the aggression. The same sources say that despite his injuries, Father Olum is serene. It seems that two catechists, a woman and a man, the latters wife, their young children and an official of the Local Security Commission were also in the car; it seems that Father Olums vehicle ran into an army car that had been attacked by the rebels. The rebels allegedly approached the priests car and told him to hand over the radio transmitter; when the priest said that he did not have it, the rebels opened fire, killing the catechists wife and the official and badly wounding Father Olum and the second catechist in the hand, while the husband of the dead woman managed to escape with his children into the bush. Nothing has been heard from them since. It seems that a soldier in the army vehicle was also killed, but this last detail has not been confirmed. [LC]
