LRA REBELS SEEK POLITICAL ASYLUM IN KENYA
General General, Brief

Police sources are looking into reports that a group of 41 Ugandan rebels from the self-proclaimed LRA (Lords Resistance Army) have crossed the border into Kenya and are now waiting to receive political asylum from Nairobi, the national press has said. Two Ugandan citizens have reportedly been arrested for illegal immigration near the border city of Malaba in the last few hours. Police have ruled out links with the rebel group that has tormented the civilian population in north Uganda for 18 years, but they have said that they will monitor the border area between the two countries. The news of the presence of 40 or so LRA members in Kenya comes from the British radio broadcaster BBC, which claims that the people in question are staying in a church in a small village on the border with Kenya.
