Kasese set to welcome Mumbere

TROUBLED: Mumbere addressing supporters at Pope Paul Centre on Saturday

By John Nzinjah

Arrangements to welcome Charles Wesley Mumbere as the Bakonzo/Bamba cultural leader (Omusinga) are in final stages in Kasese district.

However, a group of the Bakonzo and Bamba, led by National Political Commissar Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, has insisted that they are suing Mumbere and pro-Obusinga leaders if they do not abandon their plans of establishing a monarchy.

The chairman of the organising committee, Yolamu Mulima, said, We are following the law and the constitution. Those who do not want the Obusinga will stay in peace and the majority of us who like it will support it, he said on Friday.

He was part of a delegation that welcomed Mumbere at Entebbe airport on Saturday.

The delegation of about 500 included 25 district councillors, clan leaders, Rwenzururu veterans, prominent elders from Bundibugyo and Kasese districts and a group of traditional dancers and Obusinga supporters.

Kasese district chairm an Yokasi Bihande led the delegation.

Bihande said at the World AIDS Day celebrations recently that, We are not shaken by Kiyongas threats. This is a majority will. Those opposed to the Obusinga can go and hang.

Mumbere just royal guard, says rival

By Kiganda Ssonko

Charles Wesley Mumbere is an ordinary person from a clan that produces royal guards and traditional healers, a man claiming to be the rightful king of the Bakonzo/Bamba has said.

Swalleh Tibamwenda Basikania told journalists at his residence in Old Kampala on Sunday that Mumbere was not a king.

Mumbere is an ordinary Ugandan from Abahira clan known to be traditional healers and royal guards. Even Masanduku, his grandfather, was a healer. Among the Bakonzo and Bamba, a king must come from the Abasukali-Banyangalha clan, which is my lineage, he said.

Mumbere returned home from the US on Saturday.

Tibamwenda asked the government to inaugurate him as the king of the Bakonzo and Bamba.

The Bakonzo and Bamba are behind other tribes b ecause they dont have a person to guide them on development. As a king, I will promote development programmes like other kings do for their subjects, he said.

Tibamwenda showed journalists documents from the government in which he is mentioned as the crown prince of the Bakonzo.

The Government and my subjects should ignore Mumbere. What I want now is a royal palace and a diplomatic passport to enable me source assistance from international friends, he said.

He refuted the existence of the Rwenzururu kingdom, saying it was a movement set up in 1960 by Mumberes father, Isaya Mukirane Iremangoma Kibanzanga, to fight Batoro oppression.
