An army officer has been arrested on allegations that he has been hiring out guns to robbers.
The officer, Capt. Ali Kyamanywa, attached to the UPDF Air Defence and Artillery headquarters in Masindi, was arrested on orders of the Resident District Commissioner, Mr Hassan Wasswa Galiwango.
"He is a suspected robber who has been giving us sleepless nights," Galiwango said on Monday.
He said Kyamanywa was being held at the army barracks, but would be handed over to the police Violent Crime Crack Unit.
In November and December 2004, residents in the town threatened a demonstration following a high incidence of armed robberies.

They said that while police patrols had been strengthened, armed robberies too had increased in equal proportions.
"We are deployed all the time. When I finally leave Masindi, it should be a better place than I found it. I did not come to Masindi for nothing," Galiwango told The Monitor.
